"You are never too old to set another goal or to dream a new dream."
- C. S. Lewis
This quote represents my journey into education. Previous to teaching, I had a very comfortable 26 years in IT with many different experiences -- programming, training, consulting, and technical sales. However, my volunteer experience working with at-risk youth is what piqued my interest and lead me to want to try something new and different.
After taking a set of online and in class courses, I entered the teaching field in August, 2013. student teaching in a mathematics classroom at the age of 48. It was frightening to think that I was being entrusted with the education of over 100 students, yet exhilarating to work daily with the energy and enthusiasm for life that I saw in my students. I came home daily (and still do) exhausted but filled with excitement for what the next day will hold.
Now in my fourth year as a full-time "real teacher" I find myself gradually moving away from math and moving more towards computing. Whether teaching math or computers, my personal goal remains the same, to become a teacher that teaches content, provides real-world context, and motivates my students by building community in the classroom. Content needs context and both of these need a learning community.
Let's do this!
